Colors(pics) and what's this foggy transom window? Pad under hardwood?

FINALLY!!

After our 10 month drywall inspection we PAINTED!! I had no idea I was in a prison of Antique White!

We have managed to paint our living room, morning room, kitchen and hallway, NOT the foyer yet, that is massive!

When you do ceilings white, and accents walls this house sure needs a lot of "cutting in"! BEFORE:

WOW what a difference!  I can't believe I went with RED! Brick Dust and a Taupe color! I decided on an accent wall, I was afraid to paint entire morning room red, so instead I did another accent wall to tie it in....

BEFORE above.
After Brick Dust and Taupe

Ok, here is the foggy transom window, is it suposed to do that? I thought these windows are super efficient, they shouldn't have fog in them?

Exhibit B below, water looking damage at the baseboard of the front door?  I don't like the combination of these two factors.  Our RH rep is looking into it, (ya know that may be awhile).

At 10 month, Rusmur replacing some boards at front door.  Now I thought there was padding between the hardwood and the OSB?  There isnt!  And there isn't padding attached to board either. Shouldn't there be? No wonder the floors are cold and creaking? HGTV doesn't install that way!

  1. I love the colors you chose... they look really good together. They give your house a nice, warm feel. I probably would have painted the angled section above the door red too.

How many coats of red did you need?

When we painted the red accent wall in our family room we were told we'd probably need 4-5 coats to get the red to look good. I was not liking the sound of that! We stopped after 2 coats, but after seeing it in different lighting we probably should have done one more coat. That will be a good winter project... we have a little bit of touch up stuff to do so we might as well take care of it all at one time.

    1. M, we only used two coats, but we primed it before hand with a tinted primer for red paint. Maybe that made a difference.

The angled section in the kitchen is textured like the ceiling, so it's part of the ceiling, it's odd to begin with, I think no matter which way we went it kinda looks a little odd.

    2. We also used a tinted primer. It's only light in a couple of spots so I think the third coat probably would have made it look a little better, but I'm a perfectionist so I see the flaws in everything it seems. Everyone else seems to think it looks fine as is.

Oh that's odd that the angled section is textured like the ceiling... it didn't look like it in the pictures. It definitely would have looked odder (is that a word?) to paint it since it is textured.

    3. There were 4 coats used in my morning room but I used a brighter red also. I think it depends on how deep it is and what kind of base you use.

  2. Looks great! The foggy window probably means it's bad, my PM told me if any of my windows went bad we would know because they would be all fogged up. Sounds like they need to replace!

    1. Kellie, just did some research on the windows and it's ok if they fog up on the outside, but if its between the panes then there's a problem, I will check it out next time it does it :)

I also still wonder about the floors with now padding underneath.

  3. Dw your paint looks great! I love the colors you chose what a difference it makes. We also had some strange discoloration at the base of our front door, RH thought it was just discoloration of the paint...so strange. Please let us know what they say with yours , but it looks exactly like whats happening with yours....

  5. Everything looks great! I told you you would love it! Its perfect! The colors just mesh and flow from wall to wall so well together. It makes such a difference.
Sorry to see about the other issues though. I am curious to see what the end result will be.

  6. Thanks for posting. I love the color on your walls! Painting makes a HUGE difference. Interesting about the no padding thing. Maybe this is something I should request when they replace our floors.

  7. The paint looks great! It's amazing what paint can do to the feel of rooms. The seal in those windows are probably broken and they'll need to be replaced, and yes that water damage needs to be checked out asap!!!

  10. Padding is used for lamanate flooring but should never be used under hardwood. One could use red rosin paper or builders felt to help with squicks and stuff. Love your home and your blog.
