With working and just having a life, progress has slowed down a bit.
But we still make a little bit of progress here and there.
We had decided to made a partial railing at the bottom of the basement steps to open it up a bit, instead of two solid walls on the way down into the basement.
I had thought about opening it more, but afraid of too much sound traveling, I am still on the fence with this one, we can easily go more....but? IDK. Any thoughts bloggers? Below you will find two pics. One a smaller railing and one bigger.
Wow, is it fun to take a sledge hammer and knock down a wall :)

Can't comment on sound travel, but the larger open does have the added benefit of allowing you to bring larger objects down the stairs. Exercise equipment, big couches for media centers, air hockey tables, etc.
ReplyDeleteOn a related note for future builders, we were able to get Ryan Homes to give us (no cost) a half wall in our unfinished basement (drywall, not bannister) instead of the standard full wall. So if you have similar plans as dwtimes ask ahead to save 1 step of work
Jon, good advice and getting the capped half wall. Again great things to know when you are in the building aspect of things.
ReplyDeleteI like the look of the longer railing/opening, but I am not sure how it'll affect sound travel.
ReplyDeleteI agree I like the look more, but that's a personal decision. I think either way you'll get some noise travel, but the difference between the two is unlikely to make a huge difference.
DeleteDo you often spend time both upstairs/downstairs and want to avoid hearing the other space? It may not even be that important!
M and Brandon, you see we have the kids, and now they will want to hang out down there with their GF's and whatnot so? We kind of do want that sound seperation. I dont want to hear their TV and vice versa, even though we are putting up Roxul insulation, which goodness people is an arm and and leg in money!!! So we are still torn. But thanks for the input it's super helpful, guess I need to google this?
DeleteHi DW! I think the larger opening looks gorgeous! I unfoertunately can't offer any info into soundproofing, so really comes down to what your needs and likes are. Nice progress with a self made basement while maintaining a life!
ReplyDeleteChrissie, I am so on the fence about the railing? The railings are very costly. But that wall is already wasted space for us since there is a post there also, so I just dont know, hate the decisions sometimes. Now we are removing the door to the basement so, I guess it makes sense for a more open concept? Urgghh Im confused.
ReplyDeleteI definitely like the bigger opening better. It makes the room look bigger. I can't imagine it would make THAT much of a difference with the sound, but who knows!
ReplyDeleteI like the bigger opening. I also don't think it will make that much of a difference sound wise.
ReplyDeleteBTW- Roxul is expensive but worth it!!
Pink the Roxul is out of the world expensive!!! Tell me it's worth it. It will be our biggest frickin expense.
DeleteI like the larger opening better.
ReplyDeleteThanks MARIA, I think we are going to GO for the bigger one.
