I HAVE NEVER SAT IN MY DINING ROOM YET, NOT IN 6 MONTHS SINCE WE MOVED IN.
All I do is clean it and we never ever sit in there, hmmm? I ask hubby what can we do with it?
I was thinking a sitting room, but hence the question, will you sit in there either? Uhh prob NOT.
So what could I have done with that room? Mud room, laundry room?
But I am always thinking resale value when we do something to our home, and most people MAY use that room, but we have our morning room..........oh well, I guess at Christmas we will use it.
Woulda shoulda coulda!
Anybody else have a confession...LOL?
Its a pretty room that goes completely unused! Except for Harley the cat who sits on a chair :) |
If I had bought a model with a dining room I think I'd have the same confession. I love, love, love the morning room so I can't imagine ever using a different room as a dining room. We liked a couple of the larger models that had a separate dining room, but it would have just been another room in our house that didn't get used so that helped us decide on the Florence.
ReplyDeleteI never sit in the dining OR living room! I keep thinking I want to turn the living room into a study but then I think, what if one day we need it?' Would definitely use it more as a study!
ReplyDeleteWe are always wondering what to do with the living room and dining room.. Play area and Study/Office keep topping the list. Because like you we realize we'll be using the morning room for dining and family room for everything else. Lately I've been wondering about making a first floor master suite that combines both living and dining rooms into a master suite.. but that those are just crazy thoughts..
ReplyDeleteAt least you have furniture in your dining room!! Lol. I think once we get furniture for that room we will rarely use it also! Prob just for parties and family gatherings. You could make it into a craft room, extra living room with a tv, exercise room.. But you would have to put a door on probably for some of those options? It is silly having 2 dining rooms, huh?!
ReplyDeleteI have a similar confession, but worse! We have been in our new home for a year now and we haven't even purchased furniture for our formal dining room!! The worst part is, we have probably only used our morning room less than 5 times!! My husband and I live alone so we just eat at the end of our gourmet kitchen island!
ReplyDeleteCMM isnt it funny how you tend to "favor" one space in your home??
DeleteWe built a Ravenna model and our living room is our office. We are in the process of finishing up dividing the formal dining room into 2 rooms, a mudroom and pantry. We built a wall with a pocket door between the rooms so we would not mess with traffic flow. It works well with the way we live. If only the project fairy would finish it up, seems to be having issues with the cash flow fairy:)
ReplyDeleteRenee Oh you mean you dont have a cash flow fairy? Gesh I thought we all did, how about I send mine over? (slight sigh of complete ridiculousness)! LOL
DeleteWith all of the kids stuff in the family room along with the TV, our living room is the "quiet reading" area. I've seen a few make it a study, but with the amount of electronics and paper I have displaying that in the front of the house for everyone to see is a non-starter. As for the dining room, I think I've used it more for small table top projects than eating, however I also haven't readjusted the light fixture in there, the chain is still wrapped / looped from the ceiling!
ReplyDeleteThe chain is still looped, thats awesome .LOL
Deletepick me pick me!!! i have a confession. i have been in the house for almost 11 months and i can't decide on dining room furniture so its empty!!! along with the adjacent formal living room with the exception of an awesome couch we bought at belfortfurniture.com.
ReplyDelete:-/ we did use it for xmas last year. but i imagine, even if there was furniture i'd have to force myself to use it once a month. as i mentioned to my husband the other day, 75% of our house is just for decoration :)
Asia, take your time on furniture cause like you said, it will prob be decoration...hahahahaha. Shameful isnt it? The way my house is laid out, hmm, I would have to block off the entrance from the dining room to the kitchen and maybe make it a sitting room? but would I use that either, its the smallest room we have!!
DeleteWe built the Esquire model, which has a formal dining room but no living room. We use the dining room as an office. My husband and I live alone, so we have a table for 4 in our dinette and matching counter stools in the kitchen. Having another dining space is just a waste to us.
ReplyDeleteThe Esquire model has a first floor master. The master and the dining room are the only rooms on the first floor that have "real ceilings." The great room and kitchen have two-story ceilings and the morning room has a vaulted ceiling. Once you sit in those rooms, you feel claustrophobic in a room with a standard 8- or 9-foot ceiling. That's why we don't spend much time in the dining room and probably never will. We sit in the great room to watch t.v. and the morning room to have coffee, chat, listen to music, and enjoy the sunlight, which we do on a comfy sofa and love seat, not dining furniture. We're all different. It just comes down to what works for your family.
Your dining room is gorgeous, though. Love the dark wood. Resale value should be a slam-dunk.
Thanks Esquire, I do love the room, table fits perfectly, and its from our old house too, everything in that room is from my old house.
DeleteI wish we would have done vaulted ceiling in our master, but at the time you say cut back on upgrades, but their are a few things I really kick myself about.
That is so funny but I can relate. We have not moved in our house yet but I am 100% sure we will never use the formal living OR dining room... These formal rooms look pretty with their fancy furniture but I dont know anyone who actually sits in them! My plan is to find really nice but inexpensive furniture for those rooms. No use spending all that money on furniture that never gets used! lol
ReplyDeleteI concur. The chair in my foyer is from Walmart looks cool, but sit on it and it's crap...LOL
DeleteWe use our dining room every day. We did not take the morning room, though, and partly because of our floor plan. If we had we would have had three adjacent dining areas, and it made no sense.
ReplyDeleteIf had your dilemma I would make either the dining room or the morning room into a library. I would sit in there all the time. :)
Tammi girl, I have my study that I just love! I spend a lot of time in here........Hell, I blog in my study, so that tells you I USE IT!!
DeleteIt's just going to have to be "that" room ya know :)
This is exactly what we did too. Didn't take the morning room because we didn't need 3 dinning areas. (We will be using that space to have a out door dinning area later, when we grill etc).
DeleteWe took the study too with double french doors on both entrance and to the family room. I work from home and so it will be used everyday.
Have had a savoy for 9 years now. Used the dining room less than 20 times:-( Christmas and thanksgiving. That's it
ReplyDeleteOa, question, did you finish your basement, we are planning on doing it ourselves, looking for ideas.
DeleteFunny story...one day, I was looking for DH. I checked in his office in the basement, walked through the family room to check it and the kitchen, and then made my way upstairs. He was not up there, so I checked the garage and his car was still there. I finally texted him to ask where he was. He was in the living room!!! This made two things very obvious: our house is huge and I never thought to look in the front two rooms for him! We do have furniture in there, but it is a sleeper sofa that was supposed to go to the basement and didn't fit along with tables that were my grandmother's. I really want new furniture since it's the first thing people see when they enter the house, but it doesn't get used that often.
ReplyDeleteI actually have used my formal once. Soon after I moved in I felt like Thanksgiving dinner. Therefore, I made it and we all sat in the formal dining area.
ReplyDeleteI am sure it will get used for my housewarming next month.
