Fencing Decision? Help!

We really want some fencing, as my neighbor says......"Fencing makes good neighbors", even though we like our neighbors I want more privacy. we are so close together and the next phase building directly next to us I can see like 10 peoples back yard directly in a row.............uh...NO!

At first we wanted white vinyl, now I'm thinking NO, more of a beige color and more natural looking not so vinyl looking.

These are all vinyl fencing offered through Lowes. Any suggestions? Opinions?

  1. I'm liking the Arborly Gatehouse.... does it come in the color you want? We plan to fence in our back yard too, we have a very long lot that goes into the center of our block (behind the houses) as all the yards do.

    1. Jess Jess, Its funny that the one I hate the most..LOL. At first I thought it would be the one for us, but my in laws just did it to their back yard and it has a very closed in feeling and boxed in. I did a lot of research and these panel like fences give you no light and no breeze and you feel boxed in. So now I am heading towards the dogeared fences because you will get some light and breeze and not feel boxed in.! And I need brown, white just seems to stand out like a sore thumb, again I thought this would be our route but my in laws did it and its clausterphobic and we have an even smaller back yard, very small. I am looking forward to everyones thoughts, it is really helpful :)

  2. Hmm.... Maybe the Shadowbox fence would do better for you? It lets air through, not sure on cost though. 4th one down...

    1. Jess Jess, thanks so much for the suggestion, but it has a "heavy" look to it! I have till next spring, so I am doing a lot of research.

  3. We really want a fence too... but we keep going back and forth on what we want. The fence isn't quite as pressing now that one of the neighbors put up a fence though, so we've got some time to decide. We were originally dead set on a wood fence... then we saw some nice colored vinyl options (I'm not a fan of the white vinyl). The vinyl is generally more expensive but the upkeep is much better, so we are weighing our options.

I do know one thing though... even if we decide on a wood fence we will not be getting the cheap wood fence panels installed by Home Depot. We get to see that every day now and it's just not what I want in my yard.

  5. Just make sure that before you buy to see if the fencing complies with any neighborhood restrictions that may be in place. I know our neighborhood has a wrought iron style fence only provision, so just something to double check before you write the check!

  6. Just looking at those fences already making me feel claustrophobic LOL
    Have you considered semi-privacy fences?

    1. Thanushka, I am considering a "natural" fence line too! But our backyard is an uphill......so...we are going to just run a fence on either side of our home. Not gates or along the back of the house. I am still researching and may do lots of trees of bushes either...hmmm? Still thinking and researching, we are gonna do it next spring, so I am starting my research early.

  7. You haven't considered the non-privacy versions of the ones you listed? My neighbors put up a privacy fence and it looks like the Great Wall. Not a good look in correlation with the rest of the neighborhood. You may not even care, just a thought.

    1. Linda that's exactly my fear, it look like a great wall you are correct! LOL

We have been thinking about NOT doing it, we will see how these other houses get built next to us and how it lines up with our back yard...the lot next to us still has not sold either so right now we had A LOT of room which will change drastically when that house goes up about 6 feet away from us. And it depends on the neighbors and if they have 6 kids, so the fence is kinda far away in planning. This week I went to a local nursery that was 50% off and bought some stuff for the side of the house, we will see how it grows, I bought about 9 plants and a small tree...some tall grasses and some tall bushes.. I know nothing of the varieties I bought but it cost me only $75 to do it, so its a steal!! Im addicted to planting...LOL!!
